Vienna is one of the most popular cities to visit for its Christmas Markets.

We have compiled a list of the best Vienna Christmas Market Hotels. that are close to the main sights and Christmas Markets.

There are over 17 official Advent Markets in Vienna, plus many other Christmas markets scattered through the streets.

Most of the popular Christmas Markets are within, or very close to the Innen Stadt (Centre), also known as the First District (A1010). Including the Christkindlmarkt at the Rathausplatz, The Christmas Village at Stephansplatz,  Art Advent in Karlsplatz, the Christkindlmarkt am Hof, and the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt.
The Spittelberg Christkindlmarkt (7th District), the Christmas Village at Belvedere (3rd District) and the Christmas Village at the Altes AKH (8th District) are all located close to the First District.

Best Hotels close to Vienna’s Christmas Markets

We recommend that the Top 5  Vienna Districts to stay in while visiting the Christmas Markets are:

  • Innenstadt (First District)
  • Leopoldstadt (2nd District)
  • Mariahilf (6th District)
  • Neubau (7th District)
  • Josefstadt (8th District)

Short on Time  | Where we stay in Vienna

♥ When visiting Vienna with family, we loved staying in a Maisonette (two bedrooms over two floors) at the König von Ungarn.
Enough room for parents and kids and is directly in the centre of Vienna behind Stephansdom.
♥  I also love staying at Motel One Staatsoper, a great mid-range option one block from the State Opera and close to all the Christmas Markets.
 My other two favourite places are both places I regularly stay at when I visit
♥  Hotel Pension Museum in Spittelberg, directly across from the U3 Metro Stop and the Spittelberg Christmas Market, Museums Quartier and a short walk to the Rathaus Christkindlmarkt.
Theaterhotel & Suites Wien in the 8th district- where I used to live, so this hotel feels like home.

1st District: Innere Stadt (1010)

The Innere Stadt (Inner City) is Vienna’s heart,  and most of the main sights are within walking distance. The Ringstraße boulevard encompasses the 1st district.   

Pros: Home of most of Vienna’s top attractions, many restaurants, bars and cafes. Close to almost all of the main Christmas Markets

Cons: Touristy and can be expensive

Best if:  you want to be within walking distance of most of the sights and Christmas Markets.

Hotel Sacher Wien– stay in imperial glamour in this elegant 5-Star hotel located in a historic building across from the Opera House. €€€
Hotel Rathauspark WienLocated in a palace built in 1882, the hotel is one block from the Rathausplatz on a side street. Member of the Radisson Individuals. €€
Hotel König von Ungarn Located on a quiet street behind Stephensdom, the hotel has been in existence since 1700s with Hungarian nobles used to stay here. €€
Motel One Staatsoper stylish and modern rooms located only one  block from the Ringstraße and the Opera House and 5 min to the Art Advent Christmas Market in Karlsplatz. €€
Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth  Enjoy imperial elegance with modern facilities in this 4 Star hotel just a few steps away from Stephansplatz. 
Hotel Kärntnerhof On a quiet street only a 5-minute walk from Stephansplatz, this 3-Star hotel provides an affordable option in the centre of Vienna.
City Pension Hotel This family-run hotel is just a short walk from the Kärtnerstraßse as well as many attractions.

Christmas Markets in the First Distict:

  Christkindlmarkt at the Rathausplatz

  Christmas Village at Stephansdom and the Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz

  Christmas Village at Stephansdom

  Christkindlmarkt am Hof and Alt Wiener Christkindlmarkt

  Art Advent at Karlsplatz is two blocks from the Ringstaße

2nd District: Leopoldstadt (1020)

Leopoldstadt is located between the Donau (Danube) and the Donaukanal (Danube Canal) and is very close to the first district.

Pro: Close to the 1st district, cheaper accommodation, very green- home to Vienna’s largest park- The Prater

Cons: Residential, many students and can be busy

Best for:  Staying in Leopoldstadt is the perfect compromise of being in close proximity to the first district without the first district prices.

So/Vienna A modern hotel overlooking the Danube Canal.  Das Bar Loft on the 18th floor is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink while watching the sunset. €€€
Hotel Stefanie The family-run hotel, is located in a quiet area and a short walk to the 1st district.€€
Motel One Wien-Prater.   The modern and stylish rooms at the Wien-Prater Motel One are  a short walk to the U2 Underground station.€€

Christmas Markets in the 2nd District:

  Wintermarket at Riesenradplatz in the 2nd district at the Prater Park.

  Close to the Christmas Markets of the First District

6th District: Mariahilf (1060)

The district is known for shopping along the pedestrianized Mariahilferstraße,

Pro: Vibrant area,  fewer tourists, many bars, restaurants and great shopping, close to the city and with excellent transit connections

Cons: Limited parking, residential

Best for:  Those wanting to do some Christmas Shopping at some of the best European High Street shops , while being close to many of the Christmas Markets

Hotel MOTTO Located in a historic building on Mariahilf’s main shopping street, this art boutique hotel has an aura of Parisian charm.
Motel One Westbahnhof stylish and modern rooms located close to Mariahilferstraße shopping street and Westbahnhof Train Station/Metro Station.
Pension Mozart A family-run boutique hotel with a 100-year-old tradition. The hotel has been completely renovated in 2021 and offersfamily rooms and  easy contactless check-in 24/7.

Christmas Markets close to the 6th District:

  Spittelberg Christkindlmarkt is a short walk from Mariahilferstaße.

  The Modern Christmas Market at the Museums Quartier can be found at the end of Mariahilferstaßse near Museumsplatz

   The First District Christmas Markets are within walking distance including the  Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz and the Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz.

7th District: Neubau (1070)

Neubau is home to the Museum Quartier and the Biedermeier Spittelberg district. Neubau is known for its narrow cobblestone lanes and charming Biedermeier buildings.architecture

Pros: hipster, trendy, Biedermeier archetecture, close to museums,  many restaurants and bars, Nightlife

Cons: Can be pricy, busy

Best for:   Neubau is still close to the Innere Stadt, but here you can enjoy the quaintness of a village and for visitors interested in Museums.

Hotel Sans Souci Wien The 5-star hotel is located across from the Mumok Museum of Modern Art, a short walk to both the Spittelberg Christmas Market, the Christkindlmarkt at the Rathausplatz and the Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz. €€€
25Hours Hotel  This circus-themed hotel has a café and bar on the top floor with a rooftop terrace. €€€
Hotel Altstadt Vienna  This boutique hotel was converted from an apartment building. Each of the 42 bedrooms has been designed by a Viennese artist. €€
Hotel Pension Museum 3-star hotel located in a quiet area in the 7th district of Vienna. Located 5 minutes from the Spittelberg Christmas Market.

Christmas Markets close to the 7th District:

  Spittelberg Christkindlmarkt 

  The Modern Christmas Market at the Museums Quartier 

   The First District Christmas Markets are within walking distance including the  Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz and the Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz.

8th District: Josefstadt (1080)

Josefstadt is located behind the Rathaus (Vienna’s city hall). It has convenient city-centre access and is a quiet, typical Viennese neighbourhood with many small shops and family restaurants next to hipster hangouts and theaters. 

Pro: Where the locals live, Quiet streets, charming bourgeois neighbourhoods, family-friendly.  

Cons: residential,  can be expensive

Best for:   Being close to the Innere Stadt, and staying where the locals live .

Theaterhotel and Suites Wien Located next to the Josefstadt Theatre, the Theaterhotel and Suites Wien is a small but posh establishment that is in an excellent location. The 38A bus from Wien Hbf (Vienna Main train station) is conveniently located only steps away from the hotel. €€
Hotel Josefshof The 4-star hotel is steps away from the Rathaus (City Hall), Burgtheater, and Hofburg Palace. The charming hotel is in an art deco building and offers rooms in imperial or Art Nouveau styles. The hotel has a 24-hour cocktail bar offering snacks, and breakfast buffet.
Hotel Rathaus- Wein & Design A concept hotel where each room is dedicated to a specific Austrian winemaker and offers some of its best-selling wines in the minibar. Located 5 minute walk to either the Christkindlmarket at the Rathausplatz or the Spittelberg Christmas Market.

Christmas Markets close to the 8th District:

  The Altes AKH (The old General Hospital) Christmas Village is in the 8th District.

  Spittelberg Christkindlmarkt is a short bus ride away

   The First District Christmas Markets are within walking distance, or a short tram ride,  including the Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz and the Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz.
