Where to Find the Best Vienna Christmas Market Mugs

Every Vienna Christmas Market — from the grand Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt to the elegant Schönbrunn Palace market — offers its own unique mug design.
You’ll find them at the Glühwein and punch stalls, where the magic begins.

When you order a warm drink (typically priced between €5–8 depending on the type), you’ll also pay a mug deposit of €4–5.
Once you finish, you can either return the mug to reclaim your deposit or keep it as a keepsake — a perfect memento of your visit.

Important tip: The listed drink prices at the stalls don’t include the mug deposit.
Always check the total before paying.

How to Buy a Vienna Christmas Market Mug

To get your Vienna Christmas Market mug, head to any stall selling Glühwein or Punsch.

  • Order your drink of choice.
  • Pay for the drink plus the mug deposit.
  • Enjoy your warm beverage while exploring the market.
  • Return the mug to the same stall if you want your deposit refunded — or take it home as your souvenir.

Keeping your mug is a tradition and one of the most charming ways to remember your time in Vienna.

What Is Glühwein?

No visit to a Viennese Christmas market is complete without a cup of Glühwein (mulled wine).
This popular festive drink is a warm, spiced wine — traditionally red (Rotwein) or white (Weißwein) — infused with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, orange slices, sugar, and sometimes a touch of vanilla.

Served steaming hot, Glühwein is the heart of Austrian winter celebrations, enjoyed everywhere from city markets to mountain ski chalets.

Insider Tip: Bring the flavours of Vienna’s Christmas Markets home with you. Most Austrian grocery stores sell ready-made Glühwein spice mixes in the spice aisle, and you can also find Glühwein tea bags in the tea and coffee section — perfect for recreating the festive taste anytime.

What Drinks Can You Buy at the Christmas Markets?

Vienna’s Christmas Markets offer a wide range of festive hot drinks, in addition to Glühwein for every taste:

Hot Chocolate (Heißes Schokolade)- Available in a non-alcoholic version or a spiked version with a shot of rum for an extra festive kick.

Punsch – A warm, fruit-based alcoholic punch made with rum or brandy and mixed with apple, orange, raspberry, strawberry, wild berry, or mango flavours.
Recently, the French aperitif Lillet has become a trendy punch base, offering a lighter, aromatic twist.

Non-Alcoholic Punch (Kinderpunsch) For families or those avoiding alcohol, try Kinderpunsch — a sweet, spiced, fruit-based punch perfect for children or anyone looking for a cosy, alcohol-free option.

Turbo Punsch –As its name suggests, Turbo Punsch is a stronger, spirit-enhanced punch for those looking for an extra warming kick.

Typical Prices:

  • €3.50–4 for Kinderpunsch
  • €5–6 for Glühwein
  • €7–8 for premium punches

Remember: the mug deposit is charged in addition to the drink price.

2025 Christmas Market Mug Update

or as I call it …The Great Vienna Christmas Market Mug Quest 2025✨
Because ’tis the season… to judge mugs.
So, I set out to find the best Christmas market mugs across Vienna.  Armed with cold fingers, high expectations, a taste for Glüwein and zero self-control,

Here’s my rundown:
AKH Christmas Market  (Campus of the University of Vienna Christmas Market)

My absolute favourite this year—and yes,
this is the one that made it into my suitcase.
It’s my old home-turf Christmas market—once an 8th-district girl, always an 8th-district girl.
Zero regrets. 10/10 happy memories & my designated 2025 tea mug.

2025 AKH Christmas Market Mug

Rathausplatz – The Vienna Christmas Market
Serving the same mug style as last year—classic, dependable, like that one friend who’s always on time.
There was a stand near the Heart Tree with alternative designs, though… think pink, green -cute, maybe a little flirty.

2025 Rathausplatz Christmas Market Mug stall

2025 Rathausplatz Christmas Market Mug

Am Hof

Blue, medieval-inspired mugs.
Honestly, I felt like I should be sipping mead and discussing dragon taxes.
Not complaining.

And this year… my absolute favourite hot drink was the Holunder Punsch (Elderberry Punch) at the Enzian Punsch Alm hut in the Am Hof Market.
So warming, fruity and festive — a must-try if you’re visiting!

2025 Am Hof Christmas Market Mug

Stephansplatz

I arrived braced for disaster—rumours had it this year’s mugs were plastic (the audacity).

In 2024, Stephansplatz had the very collectable boot mug

BUT! Crisis averted.
They were actually… not terrible.

Even better: you can still buy the iconic boot mugs at one of the stands (also spotted the same at Belvedere). Peace restored.

2025 Stephansplatz Christmas Market Mug stall

2025 Stephansplatz Christmas Market Mug

Schönbrunn Palace
Schönbrunn update: same classic white mugs—your choice of Schönbrunn Palace chic or Sissi serving imperial holiday realness.

Very, “I drink Glühwein, but make it imperial.”

Also, yes, that’s my Lángos photobombing. Responsible festivity – don’t drink on an empty stomach.

Note: I even came across a more glam edition—same mug design, but with a gold-plated handle and inner shine. Full “I’m a princess” vibes.

2025 Schönbrunn Christmas Market Mugs

Art Advent (Karlsplatz)

This year’s lineup: the returning black mugs—mysterious, brooding, and possibly into poetry.
Perfect for those who want to sip quietly while pondering life… or plotting their next creative masterpiece.

Plus a bold orange design that screams, “Look at me, I sparkle in candlelight.”
Full-on seasonal chic with a side of artistic drama.
Definitely for the “I bring the energy, the glow, and maybe the Glühwein” crowd.

2025 Art Advent Christmas Market Mugs

Spittelberg Christmas Market

White mug with a sweet blue dove—soft, peaceful, and totally
“I’m here for artisanal vibes and gentle holiday magic.”

Sip slowly, gaze meaningfully at fairy lights, maybe write a haiku about mulled wine.

2025 Spittelberg Christmas Market Mug

‘Alt Wiener Christmas Market
Green-and-burgundy combo
Probably my least favourite—that’s… trying.
Not the most exciting mug, but perfect for people serious about actually drinking Glühwein.
The real magic comes from the amazing Alt Wien Christmas Market vibes—sip, stroll, repeat, and let the festive chaos do the heavy lifting.

Among collectors, the boot-shaped Vienna Christmas Market mugs are the most sought-after.
In 2024, these popular boot mugs can be found at the Weihnachtsdorf (Christmas Village) markets.

Weihnachtsdorf Maria-Theresien-Platz (Note: this market will not operate in 2025)

In 2025 -You’ll find the boot Christmas Market Mugs  at stalls :

  • Weihnachtsdorf Stephansplatz
  • Weihnachtsdorf Belvedere Palace

These mugs are limited edition and change every year, making them an essential find for dedicated collectors.

Vienna Christmas Market Mug Tips

1. Beware of Mug Scams

Recently, scammers posing as “staff” have been spotted collecting mugs from visitors, claiming they’ll return them for a refund.
Never hand your mug to anyone except the official stall staff.
Only return mugs directly at the kiosk where you purchased your drink.

2.  Bring Cash (Euros)

While some stalls accept Visa or Mastercard, many remain cash-only.
Bring enough euros — including coins — as you may also need them for public washrooms.

3.  Money-Saving Tip:
Use a Bankomat (ATM) located inside or near a bank for the best exchange rates. On-site market ATMs usually have higher fees.

4.  Bring a Backpack or Extra Bag

A sturdy backpack or tote is essential for carrying your mugs and other market treasures safely.
With dozens of beautiful designs to choose from, it’s easy to collect more than one!
