Step-by-Step Guide to Plan Your Austria’s Christmas Markets Holiday

Step 1: Start Researching Early

To plan a Christmas Market trip that runs smoothly from start to finish, begin your research as early as possible.
Austria’s festive season is immensely popular, and early planning ensures you’ll have the widest choice of hotels, flights, and travel routes.

🌟🌟 Start by familiarising yourself with the unique character of Austria’s Christmas Markets—each city offers something a little different, from Vienna’s grand palace settings to Salzburg’s musical streets and Innsbruck’s snow-capped charm.

🌟🌟 Understanding local customs will enrich your experience and help you travel like a local.

🌟🌟 Explore our in-depth guides on Austrian Christmas Traditions, Austria Christmas Market Tips, and Common Christmas Market Mistakes to learn what to expect, how to prepare, and how to make your trip as magical as possible.

Step 2: Choose Your Travel Dates

The Christmas Market season in Austria typically runs from late November until 23 December, although some markets, such as the Schönbrunn Palace Market in Vienna, remain open until 6 January.

Most others close by 23 or 24 December, so plan your travel dates accordingly to make sure you don’t miss out.

🌟🌟 How Many Days need to visit the Christmas Markets?
Your total trip length will depend on how many cities and Christmas Markets you plan to visit.
Be sure to include extra days for day trips to the Alps, skiing, or attending seasonal events.

Suggested Christmas Market Trip durations:
Vienna: 3–5 days
Salzburg: 2 days
Innsbruck: 2 days
Wolfgangsee: 1–2 days

Check our Austria Christmas Market Dates and city-specific itineraries, including the Vienna Christmas Market Guide and the Salzburg Christmas Market Guide. You can also buy our Vienna Christmas Market  Itinerary.

Christmas Market Planning Tips

🎄Austrians celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve, and most shops close around 4 p.m.

🎄December 25 and 26 are public holidays, so book restaurants and check attraction opening hours in advance.

👹 The traditional Krampus parades take place on December 5-6, mainly in Salzburg, Innsbruck and the surrounding alpine villages, so plan your itinerary around these if you want to experience this ancient Alpine tradition.

🌟Weekends in December are the most atmospheric but also the busiest. For a quieter experience, plan your visits midweek when the markets are less crowded.

❄️If you’re hoping for snow, aim to travel in mid-December, when the chances are highest—particularly in alpine towns like Salzburg or Innsbruck. While snow is not always guaranteed in the cities, both are close to the Alps, making it easy to add a day trip or a short ski break for a true winter wonderland experience.

Step 3: Plan your Budget & Money Tips

Your budget for an Austria Christmas Market trip will vary depending on your accommodation style, travel pace, and activities such as tours, cooking classes, concerts, or ski trips.

Most Austrian Christmas Markets do not charge an entry fee, although some, like the Hellbrunn Christmas Market in Salzburg, have a small admission of €8 (children under six are free).

Average costs:

🌟Glühwein: €5–8
🌟Food: €5–10 per item
🌟Mug deposit: €4–5
🌟Handmade gifts: €10–50+

Christmas Market Money Tips

Carry Euros (€) for smaller stalls and public toilets.
While many vendors accept cards, some smaller huts and food stalls only take cash, so having euros on hand is essential.
Always pay in local currency, not foreign notes.

Tipping: Austrians—and Europeans generally—do not tip large amounts.
For good service, it’s customary to round up the bill (for example, €56 becomes €60) or add 5–10%.

For more detailed budgeting tips, see our Austria Travel Budget Guide.

Step 4: Decide Which Cities and Markets to Visit

One of the joys of visiting Austria during the festive season is that almost every town and village hosts its own Christmas Market, each with a distinct character and atmosphere.

When planning your trip, decide whether:

🌟You’d prefer to immerse yourself in one city for a few days or,
🌟Create a multi-city Christmas Market itinerary that lets you experience Austria’s regional traditions and landscapes.

Top Christmas Market Destinations:

🎄Vienna: Home to more than a dozen Christmas Markets, including Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn Palace, and Belvedere Palace. Vienna’s Christmas Markets are elegant, festive, and wonderfully diverse, blending imperial grandeur with cosy local charm.

Explore our  Best Vienna Christmas Markets and our 3-5 Day Vienna Christmas Market Itinerary for the best routes and insider tips.

🎄Salzburg: With romantic small-town charm and historic squares filled with music, Salzburg feels like a real-life Christmas wonderland. The birthplace of Mozart comes alive with carols, twinkling lights, and festive aromas drifting through its narrow lanes.
With six main Christmas Markets, including the iconic Christkindlmarkt at the Cathedral Square, there’s magic around every corner.
See our detailed Salzburg Christmas Markets Guide for planning inspiration.

🎄Innsbruck: Framed by majestic mountain peaks, Innsbruck’s Christmas Markets combine alpine beauty and medieval ambience. The city’s old town lanes sparkle with fairy lights, while the markets serve traditional Tyrolean treats in a breathtaking winter setting.

🎄 Graz: An authentic, less touristy destination, it offers a relaxed atmosphere filled with Styrian traditions, regional crafts, and hearty winter food.

🎄Smaller Gems: Don’t overlook towns such as Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang, and Linz. These smaller markets deliver a more intimate, fairy-tale atmosphere—perfect for those who prefer a peaceful escape from the bigger crowds.

🎄If you have a few extra days, consider adding Munich to your itinerary. Just two hours from Salzburg or Innsbruck, Munich’s renowned Christmas Markets offer a wonderful taste of German holiday traditions.
Plus, Munich International Airport is a significant entry hub for Austria, making it a practical and festive addition to your Austrian Christmas journey.

Step 5: Plan Your Multi-City Route

Austria’s compact size makes it ideal for a multi-city Christmas Market trip, but planning your route carefully is essential.
The challenge is planning a logical route to ensure your trip remains enjoyable rather than exhausting.

Day trips can be rewarding, but in winter, shorter daylight hours and slower travel times can make long journeys tiring. You may also miss out on the evening magic of the markets—the twinkling lights, festive pageantry, seasonal events, and, of course, the food and drinks that create the full Christmas experience.

To minimise stress and maximise enjoyment, it’s recommended to choose one or two main bases, such as Vienna, Salzburg, or Innsbruck, and plan shorter day trips from there.

Austria Christmas Market – Suggested Routes

🎄Ultimate 2-Week Christmas Market Holiday:  Vienna → Salzburg → Salzkammergut → Innsbruck → Munich

🎄7-Day South-to-North Route:  Vienna → Graz → Salzburg

🎄5-Day Best of Austria Christmas Markets:  Vienna → Salzburg

🎄Alps Christmas Market Holiday:  Salzburg → Salzkammergut → Innsbruck

By choosing strategic bases and a logical travel route, you can experience Austria’s festive charm without rushing, savouring the atmosphere of each Christmas Market and the surrounding towns.

Austria Christmas Market – Route Planning Tip 🎄

If you’re planning to visit multiple Christmas markets across Austria, the most efficient way is to travel in one direction—either East to West or West to East. This helps you avoid backtracking and saves valuable time.

✨ A great route is to fly into Vienna, visit Salzburg and Innsbruck, and then fly out from Innsbruck, Salzburg, or even nearby Munich.

Step 6: Book Flights

Booking your flights early is essential for securing the best deals, especially during the busy Christmas season.

Austria’s main airports—Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck—are well connected to city centres by efficient train and bus networks, making it easy to reach your accommodation quickly and comfortably.

Austrian Airlines, and Lufthansa are part of  Europe’s largest airline network, and a member of the Star Alliance, offering convenient connections across Europe and beyond.

Many travellers also choose to fly into Munich International Airport, just across the German border. Munich provides additional flight options and often cheaper fares, and it is only a short train ride from Salzburg or Innsbruck, making it a practical choice for your Austrian Christmas Market trip.

For a hassle-free transfer from the airport to your hotel, consider pre-booking a Welcome Pickups transfer. With an English-speaking driver and a transparent, fixed fare, you can arrive stress-free and start your festive adventure immediately.

Learn more about the options in our How to Fly to Austria Guide.

Step 7: Reserve Accommodation Early

It’s important to reserve your accommodation 6–12 months in advance, as Austria’s Christmas Markets attract visitors from across Europe and beyond.
Hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses book up quickly during the festive season, so early planning ensures you get the location and style that suits your trip.

🌟🌟 Where to stay:

🎄Vienna: Innere Stadt, for walking distance to major sights, markets, and convenient public transport.

🎄Salzburg: Altstadt or Neustadt, offering easy access to the Christmas Markets and historic sights.

🎄Innsbruck: Central locations or properties with mountain views add extra festive charm.

Where we stay in Vienna
♥ When visiting Vienna with family, we loved staying in a Maisonette (two bedrooms over two floors) at the König von Ungarn.- behind Stephansdom.
♥  I also love staying at Motel One Staatsoper, a great mid-range choice one block from the Opera and close to everything.
♥  Hotel Pension Museum in Spittelberg, directly across from the U3 Metro Stop and Museums Quartier
♥  Theaterhotel & Suites Wien in the 8th district- where I used to live so this hotel feels like home.

Read our blog for more recommendations on Where to Stay in Vienna near the Christmas Markets

Where we Stay in Salzburg
♥ As one of the hotels we always dreamed of staying at, we loved the famous luxury Hotel Goldener Hirsch, located directly on Getreidegasse.
♥  I enjoy staying at the charming 3-star Altstadt Hotel Hofwirt, located on the Linzer Gasse pedestrian zone-  close to everything.
♥  For budget-conscious travellers, I recommend staying at the Gästehaus im Priesterseminar. Located less than a 5-minute walk from Mirabell Palace and Gardens, it offers excellent value close to the Christmas Markets, major sights.

Step 8: Plan and Book Transport Within Austria

Once your itinerary is set, the next step is to decide how you will travel between Christmas Market destinations.

Travelling by Train is the most convenient option for most travellers. Trains in Austria are fast, efficient, and scenic, making them ideal for winter travel without the stress of navigating roads or finding parking.
Book early for the best fares, as the winter train schedule is typically released in October.
For route planning and tips, see our Austrian Train Guides.

Public transport within cities is reliable and well-connected.
Vienna Public Transport and Salzburg Public Transport networks make it easy to explore major attractions, and other cities such as Innsbruck, Graz, and Linz offer similarly excellent systems.
Towns and villages are also well served by regional buses and trains.

Top Tip

Guests at hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs, and self-catered apartments in the State of Salzburg often receive a Salzburg Mobility Card, granting free transport across the entire region.

Driving is also an option for those confident in winter conditions.
Austria’s roads and highways are world-class and well-maintained, with snow cleared promptly.
If you choose to drive, make sure you have a Vignette toll pass and are familiar with winter road requirements. See our Driving in Austria Guide and Vignette Guide about Road Tolls for details.

Car rental is usually easiest and cheapest from airports—Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, or Munich. Check availability and prices early to secure the best options. Learn more in Renting a Car in Austria.

Step 9: Create your Christmas Market Itinerary

Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck each host multiple Christmas Markets, each with its own unique atmosphere, schedule, and focus.

🌟Some markets can be fully explored in 1–2 hours, while others may require multiple visits to truly appreciate their offerings.

🌟Different Christmas Markets specialise in different experiences: some are renowned for traditional food, others for handmade
souvenirs, some cater to families with children’s activities, and others are perfect for enjoying evening lights and festive drinks.

🌟Every market also hosts performances and seasonal events—check official websites for the most up-to-date calendars and schedules. You can find the links in our Austria Christmas Market Dates Guide.

🌟To soak up the true magic of an Austrian Christmas, mix it up!
Pair the big, iconic markets with charming local gems that offer a more authentic, cozy festive vibe.

🌟Plan your days with intention so you don’t miss the highlights—but don’t over-schedule.
Leave space for wandering, warm drinks, and unexpected discoveries. That’s where the real Christmas magic happens.

Austria Christmas Market – Itinerary Tips

🎄Visit popular markets during the day to browse stalls and purchase souvenirs without crowds.
🎄Return in the evening to enjoy the festive lights, performances, and lively atmosphere.
🎄Group visits to Christmas Markets that are close together to minimise travel time and make the most of your day.

🌟🌟 Highlights to include on your Itinerary:
🎄Vienna Rathausplatz: Iconic and bustling, complete with skating rinks.
🎄Schönbrunn Palace Market: Elegant backdrop featuring artisan crafts.
🎄Salzburg Domplatz & Residenzplatz: Baroque architecture complemented by carols.
🎄Innsbruck Old Town Market: Historic streets set against snow-capped peaks.

Stroll through cobblestone streets, visit museums, palaces, and churches, and soak up the festive atmosphere to create lasting memories.

Christmas Markets attract large crowds, and popular tours and sights book up quickly, so it’s wise to plan and book in advance.
Similarly, booking restaurants early ensures you don’t miss out on experiencing Austria’s culinary delights.

Additional seasonal activities to include:
Classical concerts in Vienna or Salzburg
Krampus Runs in early December for a unique Alpine tradition. Learn about Krampus and where to find the parades in our Krampus Guide
Ice skating at Vienna Rathauspark or Salzburg Mozartplatz
Cable car rides in Innsbruck or in the Alps south of Salzburg for panoramic alpine views

Visiting Austria’s Christmas Markets involves spending long periods outdoors, so it’s essential to dress appropriately for the winter weather.

Temperatures can range from sunny 10°C days to snowy, freezing evenings, and being underdressed or overdressed can quickly dampen even the jolliest of Christmas spirits.

Layering is key—wear multiple layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Include waterproof boots, warm gloves, a hat, and a windproof, waterproof jacket to stay comfortable throughout the day.

Don’t forget a small backpack to carry extra layers, souvenirs, and any essentials you may need while exploring the markets.

Take your time and savour every moment of your Austria Christmas Market experience.
