Vienna: Waltzes, Opera and Iconic Traditions
Vienna is the epitome of classical New Year’s elegance.
On New Year’s Eve, the Vienna State Opera performs Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, a long-standing tradition that embodies Vienna’s love for operetta and celebration.
Across the city centre, the famous FREE Silvesterpfad, or New Year’s Eve Trail, transforms Vienna into a vast open-air celebration.
From mid-afternoon on 31 December, live music, food stalls and dancing take over historic locations, leading all the way to midnight fireworks and the tolling of the Pummerin bell at St Stephen’s Cathedral.

As midnight approaches, Austrians gather to dance the Viennese Waltz to The Blue Danube.
In Vienna, this moment is especially magical at Rathausplatz or in front of Stephansdom, where locals and visitors alike waltz beneath the night sky.
On New Year’s Day, attention turns to the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert, broadcast live across Austria and around the globe.
Tickets for this iconic concert are allocated by lottery months in advance, with applications opening each February.

The evening includes children’s daytime smoke fireworks, the traditional fortress marksmen’s New Year shooting, and a live broadcast of the year-end service from Salzburg Cathedral.
At midnight, fireworks illuminate Hohensalzburg Fortress, creating a spectacular backdrop above the baroque city.

Elegant dining experiences are also popular, including the gala dinner at the IMLAUER Hotel Pitter with live music, midnight champagne and fireworks streamed live from Vienna.
Alternatively, St Peter Stiftskulinarium combines an exquisite New Year’s Eve dinner with Mozart’s music in a historic setting, while the Best of Mozart New Year’s Fortress Concert offers a memorable evening high above the city.
