What to Expect During Public Holidays in Austria

When travelling in Austria during public holidays, it’s important to plan ahead.
Most shops close for the day — with the exception of grocery stores in major transit hubs and popular tourist areas.
Museum schedules, café hours, and restaurant availability can also vary, so checking their official websites is always a smart move.

Please be aware that each Austrian state observes additional regional holidays, which may impact local businesses and attractions.

Traveller’s Tip:
Austrians celebrate Christmas on December 24 (Christmas Eve)

Many sights, shops, cafés, and even some restaurants close by late afternoon (around 16:00 / 4 PM).
To make the most of your visit — especially on holidays — it’s best to book restaurant reservations in advance and plan sightseeing around limited opening hours.
