Austria Itinerary FAQ
How many days do you need in Austria?
It depends on where you want to go and what you want to see. If you’re focusing on cities, you could spend 3–5 days in Vienna, while Salzburg and Innsbruck are ideal for 2–3 days each.
A one-week trip is enough to visit Austria’s highlights, such as Vienna, Salzburg, and the beautiful lakes region.
However, a 10–14-day itinerary allows for a more relaxed pace, giving you time to explore alpine villages, scenic train routes, and smaller towns across the country.
➡️ See the 14-Day Best of Austria Itinerary to help plan a well-balanced two-week trip.
Is 14 days too long to Visit Austria?
Not at all.
Two weeks gives you time to explore several regions at a relaxed pace, combining major cities, alpine villages, lakes, and cultural experiences.
You can balance sightseeing with scenic travel, enjoy local cuisine, and take your time in places like Salzburg, Hallstatt, Innsbruck, and Vienna without feeling rushed.

When is the best time to visit Austria?
Austria is a year-round destination, and the best time to visit depends on the experiences you want.
Summer (June–August) is perfect for lakes, hiking, and outdoor adventures. Winter (December–February) is ideal for skiing, snowy alpine villages, and festive Christmas markets.
Spring and autumn offer fewer crowds, mild weather, and beautiful seasonal scenery, making them perfect for sightseeing and exploring at a relaxed pace.

Should you visit Hallstatt as a day trip?
We generally do not recommend visiting Hallstatt as a day trip for several reasons.
First, it involves a long journey — around 1.5 hours each way from Salzburg and about 3.5 hours from Vienna — so much of your day is spent travelling, leaving little time in the village itself.
Second, most day-trippers arrive at the same time, making the small village extremely crowded. Parking is also very limited, and large numbers of short visits contribute to overtourism in this delicate alpine environment.
If possible, stay overnight in Hallstatt. This allows you to experience the village early in the morning and in the evening after the day-trip crowds have left, which is a far more enjoyable and responsible way to visit.
➡️ Read the Hallstatt Travel Guides for tips on how to visit responsibly and what to see and do in the region.
