Understanding Austria’s Autumn Weather
Autumn in Austria is a season of contrasts. The air turns crisp, the mountains glow with fiery larches, and cities take on a golden charm.
Yet the weather can be unpredictable.
In September, you might enjoy warm afternoons in Vienna, while alpine valleys will be cooler.
By October, expect chilly mornings, foggy lakeshores and bursts of sunshine, and in November, there’s a real chance of early snow in higher regions.
Temperatures typically range from the high teens in September down to single digits in November.
In alpine areas, it’s noticeably cooler, while cities like Graz and Vienna remain milder for longer.
Because the weather shifts quickly, layering is essential.
A flexible wardrobe lets you adapt from sunny vineyard strolls to brisk mountain hikes without missing a beat.
Average Autumn minimum and maximum temperatures

| Vienna | 12-22°C (53.5-72°F) | 7-15°C (45-59F) | 3-9°C (38-48°F) |
| Salzburg | 9-18°C (48-65°F) | 4-14°C (39-57F) | 0-8°C (32-46°F) |
| Innsbruck | 4-15°C (39-59°F) | 0-10°C (32-50F) | -5 – 4°C (23-39°F) |
| Graz | 10-21°C (50-70°F) | 5-15°C (41-59F) | 2-9°C (36-48°F) |

*Note: These are averages for a guide. But check the weather forecasts before you travel.
It is not usual to have 25°C+ (77°F) days in September and October- even in the Alpine valleys.

Pack an Autumn Capsule Wardrobe
Keep your wardrobe practical and compact by choosing items that work together:
- Stick to 2–3 versatile bottoms that can be worn multiple times.
- Add in 5-10 tops
- Neutral colours like grey, navy, and black form a strong base, while scarves, hats, and gloves can add seasonal pops of colour.
- Select pieces that are suitable for outdoor walks, city explorations, and evening dinners.
With a well-planned capsule wardrobe and smart layering, you’ll be ready to enjoy Austria’s autumn — from golden forests and mountain hikes to cosy cafés and spa days — without overpacking.

Layering for Comfort: The Key to Autumn Travel
Packing for autumn is all about flexibility. Days can start crisp and chilly, then warm up under the sun or inside cosy cafés.
Layering allows you to adapt easily to changing temperatures while staying comfortable and stylish.
Think of your clothing as building blocks rather than bulky pieces.
This approach keeps you comfortable whether you’re sipping coffee in Salzburg or hiking in Tyrol.
Tops
Start with lightweight tops and breathable base layers.
Include short- or long-sleeve tees, thin knits, and cotton shirts for layering.
Add cosy jumpers, cardigans or fleece pullovers that can be pulled on or off as the day changes.
👉 Pro tip:
Layering multiplies your outfit options. Several lightweight pieces can be mixed and matched for different looks, while a bulky jumper/sweater can only be worn in a single way.
Bottoms
Jeans and comfortable trousers work well for Autumn visits to European cities and towns.
Leggings or thermal tights are ideal for layering in colder weather.
Jacket
A waterproof jacket or raincoat is a must, as autumn showers arrive without much warning.
For mountain trips, a warm coat or packable down jacket will keep you snug on frosty mornings and at higher elevations.
We recommend bringing a light fleece jacket or vest. This can be worn alone or as an extra inner layer for colder temperatures.
Footwear: Comfort and Versatility
Autumn in Austria means a mix of city streets, cobbled lanes, and outdoor trails.
Choose footwear that keeps you comfortable all day and handles changing conditions:
♦ Hiking or walking boots – Waterproof boots are ideal for countryside walks, alpine trails, and damp mornings.
Look for lightweight options that don’t weigh you down.
♦ Everyday shoes – Comfortable trainers or walking shoes for city explorations, museums, and casual dining.
♦ Optional – A pair of smart shoes or ankle boots for evenings out or cosy restaurants.
👉 Pro tip: Make sure all shoes are broken in before your trip — nothing spoils a hike or city stroll like sore feet!
Must-Have Autumn Accessories
Accessories make all the difference when the temperatures drop.
A scarf, gloves and hat will keep you cosy during crisp mornings or alpine evenings.
Accessories are a great way to add colour, style and diversity to your outfits.
A compact umbrella or rain poncho is practical for city wanderings, while sunglasses protect against the surprisingly intense autumn sun reflecting off lakes and mountain peaks.
Packing for Autumn Activities in Austria
Hiking and Outdoor Adventures
For anyone hitting the trails, sturdy boots, a warmer jacket, walking poles, and a reliable daypack are invaluable. A refillable water bottle is essential too — Austrian tap water is among the purest in the world.
Exploring Cities
City breaks call for smart-casual outfits. Think comfortable layers you can dress up with a nice scarf or jacket for evenings in cafés, concerts or dinner at a traditional inn.
Concerts and Fine Dining. Even in autumn, evenings out in Vienna, Salzburg, or Innsbruck can call for something a bit smarter.
If you are attending a cultural event or planning to make reservations at nicer restaurants, make sure to pack one dressy outfit.
A simple cocktail dress or a nice top with tailored trousers works perfectly for women. Men can pack slacks with a button-up shirt.
You don’t need anything extravagant — just something comfortable and versatile that works for concerts, fine dining, or theatre evenings.
Relaxing in Thermal Spas
Austria’s thermal spas are particularly inviting in autumn. Pack a swimsuit, flip-flops and a lightweight robe or cover-up to make the most of the experience.
Practical Autumn Travel Essentials
Even in autumn, it’s essential to be prepared for a day of exploring Austria’s cities, mountains, and countryside.
A few practical items will make your trip smoother and more comfortable:
♦ Daybag -Perfect for carrying layers, snacks, and water while exploring. We find a simple crossbody bag works best. It keeps your hands free, sits close to your body, and looks stylish.
♦ Reusable water bottle – Staying hydrated is essential, whether you’re wandering city streets, hiking forest trails, or exploring lakesides.
♦ First-aid kit – A small kit with plasters, pain relief, and any personal medications is handy, particularly for hikers and outdoor adventurers.
♦ Sunscreen and lip balm – Crisp autumn air and wind can dry out skin, and the low sun can still be strong, especially at higher altitudes.
♦ Electronics essentials – A European plug adaptor and portable charger will keep phones, cameras, and other devices powered during long days of sightseeing.
Smart Autumn Packing Tips
♦ Versatile ayers are more practical than bulky pieces and take up less space in your bag.
♦ Stick to mix-and-match neutral colours so your wardrobe works for both city and country settings.
♦ A small day bag is useful for carrying essentials during day trips.
♦ And finally, leave some room in your suitcase — autumn markets are perfect for picking up scarves, wine or local crafts to bring home.
Packing for Austria in autumn doesn’t have to be complicated, nor do you need to cram in everything you own.
With the right packing strategy, you’ll be ready to enjoy golden forests, crisp mountain air, cosy cafés, and all the seasonal experiences that make Austria in autumn unforgettable.
