Step 1. Decide the best time to visit Austria

Note: We recommend starting your planning at least 3–6 months before your holiday.

Austria is a year-round destination with memorable experiences for every season. There’s no wrong time to visit, but some times may suit your interests better depending on the activities, events, and sights you want to enjoy.

Summer is popular for sightseeing, hiking, walking, and exploring the mountains and countryside.

In winter, many visitors come to Austria to enjoy its Winter wonderland atmosphere, the Christmas Markets and skiing.

The Spring and Autumn shoulder seasons are a great time to explore, with fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices.
It’s also worth considering Austrian holidays, special events, and festivals when planning your trip.

  • Do you want to waltz around an opulent ballroom during ball season?
  • Would you like to hear classical music or attend an opera, or see a performance at one of Austria’s famous festivals?
  • Do you want to watch cows come down from the Alpine pastures during the Almbetrieb?
  • Are you excited about being scared by Krampus during winter?

Austria Travel Inspiration

  • Austria at Christmas – Discover the magic of Austria’s Christmas Markets, festive traditions, and winter charm that make the season unforgettable.
  • Skiing in Austria – Explore the best ski resorts, slopes, and winter sports adventures across Austria’s stunning Alpine landscape.
  • Summer in Austria – Hike, cycle, and wander through Austria’s mountains, lakes, and charming towns during the long, sunny days of summer.
  • Autumn in Austria – Experience crisp air, colourful landscapes, and seasonal festivals that make autumn the perfect time to explore.
  • Austrian Cuisine – Savour Austria’s rich culinary traditions, from hearty mountain dishes to decadent pastries and local wines.

Step 2. Set your Travel Budget

Determining your travel budget is one of the first steps in planning any trip.

If your holiday is still a few months away, you may even have time to save to make it extra special.

Start by estimating how much you’d like or are able to spend overall.

Break it down into major categories like transportation, accommodation, food, activities, and experiences — this will help you plan a trip that fits your budget without unpleasant surprises.

Austria caters to every kind of traveller, from luxury stays and 5-star experiences to family-friendly holidays and budget adventures.

To make it easier, check out our Austria Trip Budget Planner, which provides detailed guidance on costs for different trip types and tips for keeping your spending under control.

Step 3. Decide how long to stay.

How long you have for your holiday, combined with your budget, will shape what’s possible on your trip.

Are you planning a long weekend city escape, or do you have three weeks to explore Austria from mountains to lakes and historic towns?

Knowing your timeframe early helps you prioritise destinations, plan your route, and make the most of every day without feeling rushed.

Step 4. Choose the regions and cities to visit in Austria

Think about what would make your dream holiday.

Do you want to explore vibrant cities, visit museums, attend operas or classical concerts, wander through charming mountain villages, or enjoy a mix of adventure and relaxation?

Austria offers it all — stunning Alpine scenery, lush forests, sparkling lakes, quaint villages, and opulent cities.

For the best experience, we recommend visiting a combination of cities, towns, and regions to get a real feel for the country.

Start by making a wishlist of the top places you’d like to see — this will guide your route and help shape your itinerary.

Step 5. Create your Austria Bucket List

You now have an idea of when and where you’d like to go, and for how long, so it’s time for some preliminary research.

      This website

Start building your Austria Bucket List by researching locations, activities, must-see sights, places to eat and drink, and transport options.

💡 Tip: Create a Google Map for each destination with landmarks, restaurants, cafes, and photo spots — it makes planning transport easier and acts as a handy reference when you’re on holiday.

🗺️ Tip: Most cities and regions in Austria have comprehensive tourism websites with English versions.
They’re packed with up-to-date info on sights, tours, transport, and accommodation.
To find them, Google “[city/region name] + Tourismus.”

Stay Organised with the Austria Travel Planner

Planning a trip is exciting—but with so many choices, it can get overwhelming.
That’s where the Austria Travel Planner comes in.

This downloadable toolkit has over 90 printable pages to help you track accommodation, plan your daily itinerary, compare tours and regions, and keep all your research in one place.
It also includes checklists for packing, booking, and budgeting, as well as space to jot down ideas and refine your dream itinerary.

      Use it to:

      • Organise all your research in one place
      • Compare activities, routes, and stays at a glance
      • Track bookings and travel documents.
      • Stay on top of what needs doing—and when

Whether you’re just starting or fine-tuning your plans, the Austria Travel Planner helps turn your ideas into a well-thought-out, unforgettable journey.

      Step 6.  Map your route

Figure out a logical route that makes sense geographically and works well with your transport choices.

Planning this early will save you time, reduce backtracking, and help you see more without feeling rushed.

Decide which cities you’ll fly into and out of, as this can shape your entire itinerary.

💡 Tip: Flying into Vienna and out of Munich, or vice versa, is often an efficient way to explore much of Austria without wasting time returning to your starting point.

You’ll also want to check which regional airports might suit your route best.

We’ve put together everything you need to know about Flying to Austria, including local airport options and transport connections.
➡️ Check current flight prices to Austria before you start planning

Step 7.  Determine how you will travel around Austria

Austria has an extensive transport network — trains, buses, and city public transport are easy, cost-effective, and efficient.
When choosing how to get around, don’t just focus on cost.
Think about what will make your trip enjoyable and match your travel style.

💡 Tip – Train travel: If you’re booking ÖBB trains, it’s best to book tickets and reserve seats (especially on the main Vienna–Salzburg–Innsbruck route) at least 15 days to a month in advance.
For detailed guidance, check out our Austria Train Guides
and our Top Tips for Train Travel in Austria.

      Semmering Railway © ÖBB

💡 Tip – Car rental: Driving is an excellent way to explore towns, villages, and the countryside at your own pace.

Austrian vehicles are mostly manual transmission, so automatic cars are less common and usually more expensive.
Booking early is recommended to secure an automatic if you need one.

Expect to pay around €25–100+ per day for a rental.
      Prices vary depending on:

      • Vehicle size and class
      • Extra charges such as driving outside Austria, ski racks, GPS, etc.

Discover all our top tips and hints about Driving in Austria and Renting a Car in Austria.

When comparing rental options, check for both manual and automatic availability, and make sure to include any extras you’ll need.

Compare car hire options here: Find the Best Car Rental Deals

Step 8.  Check Passports, Visas and Health Requirements

At this stage, it’s important to verify that your passport is valid for your travel dates and to find out whether you need a visa to enter Austria.
Also, check whether any immunisations or health requirements apply for your nationality.

⚠️ Important: Starting in late 2026, visitors from visa-exempt countries (including the UK, United States, Canada, Australia, and others) will need to apply for ETIAS travel authorisation before entering Austria.

For full details, check our Austria Travel Requirements guide, which covers all visa requirements and ETIAS information, so you can travel without surprises.

      Step 9.  Fine-Tune Your Itinerary

Deciding how much time to spend in each location can be tricky.

      Check:

      • Where you’re flying into and out of Austria
      • Car rental pick-up and drop-off points
      • Public transport options – trains, buses, boats

Make sure the order of your stops makes sense geographically and matches your preferred transport methods.
This will save you unnecessary backtracking and help you enjoy each location to the fullest.

💡 Top Tips for Planning Your Itinerary

      1. Spend enough time in each place
We recommend staying at least 3 nights in each destination to minimise travel stress and enjoy each place properly.
Single-night stays, even in small towns, often feel rushed — the day before and after will be mostly spent travelling and checking in.

      • 3–5 days: choose one destination (city or region)
      • 1 week–10 days: visit 1–3 locations
      • Two weeks or more: 3–4 places

      2. Don’t over-schedule
It’s easy to underestimate how long activities take or the travel time between them.
Give yourself a buffer to relax and soak up each moment. Avoid planning every minute — sometimes the best experiences are the spontaneous, off-the-beaten-track discoveries.

      3. Narrow down your list
      Ask yourself:

      • Is the season right for the activity, sight, or event?
          • Some Alpine hikes, ice caves, or the Großglockner High Alpine Road are closed in winter/spring
          • Vienna State Opera, Vienna Philharmonic, and Vienna Boys Choir performances don’t run in July or August.
      • How accessible is travel between locations, and how long will it take?
      • How many hours/days do I need to see the sights or do activities?
      • Which activities interest me most in each location?
      • What accommodation is available, and does it fit my budget?

      4. Suggested itinerary based on trip length

      • 3 days: Vienna
      • 5 days: Vienna + Salzburg
      • 7 days: Add Hallstatt or the Salzkammergut region
      • 10 days: Include Innsbruck
      • 14 days: Add Zell am See-Kaprun

      Step 10.  Book Flights

If you’re travelling internationally to Austria, flights will likely be one of the biggest expenses of your trip.

That’s why it’s worth planning carefully. It’s easy to fly directly to Austria from most parts of the world.

Direct flights from the UK, USA, Canada, the Middle East, and Europe land in Vienna at Vienna International Airport (VIE).
Some flights also land in Salzburg or Innsbruck, and Munich International Airport is a convenient option for visitors planning to cross the border.

💡 Tip: Look for the best deals by setting up price alerts on Skyscanner for your travel month, and be flexible with dates and stopovers to save money.

For more detailed guidance, check out our Flying in Austria Guide, which covers airports, transport options, and tips for navigating flights efficiently.

      Step 11.  Book your Accommodation

Austria offers holiday accommodation to suit every budget — from 5-star luxury hotels to self-catered apartments and budget hostels.

We recommend booking your stays at least three months to a year in advance, depending on your travel dates and destination.

Tip: In July and August, hotels are often fully booked up to a year ahead.

Tip: Ski resorts during Christmas and February ski holidays fill up quickly, so booking a year in advance is usually necessary.

For guidance on finding the perfect place to stay, check out our Austria Accommodation Guide, which covers locations, booking strategies, and how to match accommodation to your itinerary and travel style.

      Where we stay in Vienna
♥ Perfect for families, we loved staying in a Maisonette (two bedrooms over two floors) at the König von Ungarn -directly in the centre of Vienna, behind Stephansdom.
♥  Motel One Staatsoper, a great mid-range choice one block from the Opera and close to everything.
♥  Hotel Pension Museum in Spittelberg, directly across from the U3 Metro Stop and Museums Quartier and Theaterhotel & Suites Wien in the 8th district- where I used to live, so this hotel feels like home.
You can find more hotel recommendations in our Vienna Hotel Guide

      Where we Stay in Salzburg
♥ As one of the hotels we always dreamed of staying at, we loved the famous luxury Hotel Goldener Hirsch, located directly on Getreidegasse.
♥  I enjoy staying at the charming 3-star Altstadt Hotel Hofwirt, located on the Linzer Gasse pedestrian zone-  close to everything.
♥  For budget-conscious travellers, I recommend staying at the Gästehaus im Priesterseminar. I recently stayed in the Seminary Guesthouse located less than 5 5-minute walk from Mirabell Palace and Gardens.  It offers great value close to all the major sights.

      Where we Stay in Hallstatt
♥ We stayed at the fabulous Seehotel Grüner Baum, in a suite with a lakeside balcony -Perfect for romantic escapes, couples and families.
♥  Budget: I have stayed multiple times at Gasthof Simony, located next door to the Seehotel Grüner Baum. The B&B is lakeside, in the centre of Hallstatt.  There are rooms with shared bathrooms, but I recommend the Double Room with Balcony, Lake View and a private bathroom.

Step 12.  Book Tours, Activities, ‘Must eat-at’ Restaurants

Booking in advance is highly recommended, especially for popular attractions and experiences.

🎭 Concerts and Festivals: The Vienna State Opera, the Vienna Philharmonic, and festivals such as Wiener Festwochen, the Bregenz Summer Festival, and the Salzburg Festival are in high demand and often sell out quickly.

🏛️ Museums & Sights: Many museums, particularly in Vienna, have timed ticket entry.
During high season, reserve tickets at least one month in advance to secure your preferred time.
While some tickets may be available on the day, expect long queues and limited availability.
Tickets can usually be booked through the official websites.

🍽️ Restaurants: Popular ‘must-eat at’ restaurants in Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck should be booked at least one month in advance, especially during high season.
For Christmas, book 1–2 months ahead for key dates like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, December 26th, and New Year’s Eve.
At other times, a booking 1–2 weeks aheads usually sufficient.

⛷️ Ski Trips: Reserve ski rentals and lessons in advance. During high season (Christmas/New Year and February ski holidays), it’s best to book at least three months ahead

For inspiration and guidance, check out these detailed guides for each destination:

Step 13.  Take Care of the Practical Essentials

Before you head off, make sure you’ve got all the practical details covered so your trip runs smoothly.

Travel Insurance: Always have a comprehensive policy in place before you leave. It’s essential for health, accidents, or unexpected cancellations.

Travel Cards & Money: Decide how you’ll pay while abroad.
Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but American Express and Discover cards aren’t always taken.

Cash is still widely used in Austria and may be needed in smaller towns and villages, as well as at cafes and small vendors.

We recommend Wise (formerly TransferWise) — it allows you to hold money in over 40 currencies and spend it in more than 150 countries.
Currency exchange is done at the mid-market rate, and fees are transparent. You can also withdraw cash at ATMs abroad with your Wise card. Get Started with WISE for free

Phone & Internet: Check how your phone plan works overseas.
Decide if you need an international plan or a local eSIM. We use Airalo eSIMs, which we found provide good coverage across Europe and inexpensive weekly or monthly data plans.
Once activated, you have instant access to data.

For a full guide to staying connected, see our blog, How to Use Your Mobile Phone in Austria.

      Step 14.  Finalise Your Itinerary

By now, you’ve researched destinations, created your preliminary bucket list, booked flights, accommodation, and activities, and organised all the essentials. It’s time to bring it all together.

Go through your itinerary one last time and check:

      • Dates, times, and locations for all flights, trains, and transfers.
      • Accommodation bookings and check-in/check-out details
      • Tours, tickets, and restaurant reservations
      • Transport arrangements, rental cars, or public transport passes.
      • Daily pacing — make sure each day is realistic and allows for downtime or spontaneous exploration

Make any last-minute changes to your itinerary and finalise or confirm reservations if required.

Organise any final payments or deposits, and address special requests such as late checkouts, room types, or bed preferences.

💡 Tip: Keep both a digital and printed copy of your itinerary.
A Google Drive or offline map version can be a lifesaver if you lose phone signal or Wi-Fi access.

This step ensures your trip is smooth, organised, and stress-free, giving you confidence to relax and enjoy every moment.

      Step 15. Pack your Bags

You’ve planned your trip, booked flights and accommodation, and finalised your itinerary — now it’s time to pack!

Start by checking the weather for your destinations and season, and make a list of essential clothing, accessories, and travel documents.
Remember adapters, chargers, and any travel health items.

💡 Tip: Pack versatile layers for Austria’s changing mountain and city climates, and don’t forget comfortable walking shoes for exploring towns, lakes, and Alpine trails.
