The Ultimate Europe Winter Packing List

Christmas, Europe, Packing Lists, Winter in Austria

A complete Christmas Market Packing List

Planning a trip to Austria during the festive season is magical. From Vienna’s twinkling Rathausplatz market to Salzburg’s cosy Advent stalls, the country turns into a winter wonderland. But before you dive into mulled wine and gingerbread, you’ll want to make sure you have the right Europe winter packing list in hand.

This isn’t just about keeping warm. It’s about staying comfortable while wandering cobbled streets, enjoying outdoor concerts, and shopping for unique Austrian crafts. Whether you’re travelling exclusively for Christmas markets or on a longer European winter holiday, this Christmas market packing list will help you prepare for Austria’s chilly yet enchanting season.

Christmas Markets in Austria and Europe start in Mid to late November and run until Christmas Eve.  The weather may be cold and windy or mild.   But it is essential to pack and dress for the weather, especially when you will be spending a lot of time outdoors walking.

Expect temperatures from around -3°C to 8°C (26°F to 46°F) depending on the region and time of day. Snow and frost are common in December, but you might also get mild, damp days. Since you’ll spend hours outside walking, dressing smartly for the conditions is essential.

Hi, I’m Tammy,  founder of Wanderlustria..  I am lucky to call Austria home and even luckier that I have been visiting Christmas Markets for over 25 years.  I’ve turned my experience into helping you plan the ultimate 14-day Austria Christmas Market Itinearay.

We’ve spent years travelling across Austria in winter, from Vienna to Innsbruck. Trust us, the right packing choices make all the difference between shivering through your trip and truly enjoying every sparkling moment.

Our biggest tip is to dress for comfort and warmth.  After visiting Christmas Markets for many years, people are not dressing for a fashion show but dressing for the environment.

How to Dress for Winter in Austria-The Basics

Layering the Right Way

Packing light but warm is all about layering. The goal is flexibility—you’ll be outside in the cold but stepping into cosy cafés and grand indoor halls.
Layers help you dress for weather changes during your travel day.  You can add/shed layers based on the temperature. Everything you pack should be wearable in any weather.

Instead of bulky items, think of clothing as building blocks:

  • Base layer – A snug foundation that regulates body heat and draws moisture away. This includes breathable underwear, thermal socks, and lightweight tops.
  • Insulating layer – The warmth barrier. Look for merino wool jumpers, fleece pullovers, or thermal mid-layers. Two light sweaters will always serve you better than one oversized one, as they’re more versatile.
  • Outer layer – Your shield against the weather. A waterproof, windproof jacket with good insulation is non-negotiable.

👉 Pro tip: Layers give you far more outfit combinations. One bulky sweater/jumper can only be worn one way and looks the same in every photo.  But multiple lightweight pieces can be mixed and matched for new looks.

Building a Capsule Winter Wardrobe

Choose items that mix and match easily, so you don’t overpack. Neutrals work best—greys, blacks, and navy—then brighten things with accessories like scarves or hats.

  • Stick to 2-3 versatile bottoms you can re-wear.
  • Add colour pops with gloves, scarves, and hats for your photos.
  • Select pieces that work for both day markets and evening dinners.

Europe Winter Packing List

Essential Clothing for Austria’s Christmas Markets

Winter Jacket

You will want a jacket that keeps you warm, cosy and dry. It should be:

  • Insulated and waterproof
  • Wind resistant
  • Cosy yet breathable

Consider bringing a light fleece jacket or vest as an extra inner layer for cold days and nights.

👉 Pro Tip: It seems like everyone is wearing black or beige- if you want to stand out from the crowd, pick a different coloured jacket.

Shoes and Winter Boots

Even if there is no snow, we recommend bringing a pair of boots.  Cold feet will ruin your Winter experience. You’ll be standing and walking more than you think.

  • Waterproof boots with grip are essential, even if there’s no snow.
  • Break them in at home to avoid blisters. The worst thing is having sore feet and blisters from new shoes, which will dampen anyone’s Christmas Spirits
  • Pack one extra pair of casual shoes for indoor activities.

Winter Accessories

Don’t underestimate small items—they make the most significant difference:

Wool hat or beanie: A cosy hat or beanie to keep your head warm and retain body heat

Gloves: Since your hands will be exposed to the cold, you will want to wear gloves when strolling around the Christmas Markets. Consider touchscreen-friendly gloves, so it is easier to snap Christmas Market photos.

Scarf: Not only do scarves keep you warm, but they are also a stylish accessory.
You’ll likely be taking a lot of photos while wearing the same jacket.  Scarves are a great way to add colour, style and diversity to your outfits.

Warm socks:  Don’t forget to pack some warm winter socks.  Cold feet make for a miserable Christmas Market Experience.  We have found that merino wool socks are lightweight, breathable and warm.

👉 Pro Tip:  Christmas Markets are the best place to find valuable souvenirs for you, from warm hats, woollen socks and sweaters, gloves and mittens to colourful beautiful scarves.

Thermal Clothing

If you feel the cold, we recommend having both a thermal top and bottoms.  The most popular choice are Merino wool, but there are also many cost-effective synthetic fabric thermals.

  • 2–3 pairs of thermal tops and bottoms
  • Merino wool or high-quality synthetics are best
  • Great under jeans or trousers for extra warmth

Tops

We recommend packing a variety of tops, including long-sleeve shirts, short-sleeve tops, and Tank tops, which are great for layering under long-sleeve shirts.  Also pack lightweight sweaters/jumpers for extra warmth.

Jeans and trousers

We recommend packing at least two pairs of jeans/trousers to rotate if one gets damp.  Jeans are the perfect choice for winter in Europe – they are stylish, warm, and can match with many different outfits.  Opt for fleece-lined jeans/trousers if you get cold easily.

Avoid wide-leg trousers, which soak up slush.

Unless you are going skiing or tobogganing, we do not recommend bringing ski pants /Salopettes- they are not necessary, and you do not see anyone wearing them at the Christmas Markets.

Read our Ultimate Ski Trip Packing List for recommendations – if you are planning a ski trip.

Additional Casual Clothing

  • Dressy outfit for concerts, fine dining, or opera nights
  • Sportswear if you plan on using gym or spa facilities
  • Swimwear – many Austrian hotels have saunas or thermal spas
  • Pyjamas and undergarments

Accessories and Travel Extras

Bags

Forget bulky anti-theft bags that scream tourist. A simple crossbody bag works best. It keeps your hands free, sits close to your body, and looks stylish. For added security, consider attaching a discreet clip to your zip.

Practical Extras

  • Hand and toe warmers – lifesavers on freezing nights
  • Sunglasses – low winter sun can be blinding
  • Reusable tote or small backpack for carrying Christmas market treasures
  • Sunscreen and lip balm – cold air and wind are harsh on skin

Austria in winter is pure magic. By following this European winter packing list with an emphasis on a Christmas market packing list, you’ll be ready to explore twinkling squares, sip Glühwein, and shop for handmade gifts without worrying about the cold.
