Easter Markets in Vienna

Mar 15, 2026 | Vienna

Vienna in Springtime means it is time for Easter Markets in Vienna. The last waltzes of the Viennese ball season have been danced, and the weather signals that spring is approaching. The days are getting longer, and the first flowers are blooming. Restaurants and cafes have started to move tables and seats outdoors.
In the weeks leading up to Easter, Osterbaum (Easter tree) begin appearing everywhere in Austria. The Osterbaum is traditionally a vase filled with thin willow branches decorated with ribbons and Easter eggs.

Starting around two weeks before Easter, Easter Markets start appearing all around Austria.  The Best Easter Markets are in Vienna.
The Easter Markets in Vienna are generally open until Easter Monday.

What is an Easter Market?
Not to be confused with the bling, music and colours of Christmas Markets, Easter Markets are dedicated to Easter Eggs.

Eggs, Eggs and more Eggs
But there are no tacky plastic or chocolate eggs wrapped in coloured foil to be seen, but beautiful decorative hand-painted eggs. The decorative eggs are real eggs which have been carefully blown out, and the hollow shells are intricately decorated in all the colours of the rainbow, and come in all sorts of different sizes, designs, and patterns. These hand-painted eggs are designed to hang on your Osterbaum.

The market stalls sell not only Easter eggs but also candles, flowers, stoneware, ceramics, toys and handcrafts from all over Austria.
And no market in Austria is complete without food.
After you have found the perfect Easter eggs for your Osterbaum, you can fill your Easter basket with mustards, vinegar, oils, honey, speck, sausages, bread and cheese sourced from local farmers.
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy regional cuisines, such as wild boar sausage or bowls of goulash, as well as traditional Austrian Easter favourites such as  Osterpinz, the soft bread-like sweet pastry made from yeast dough and rabbit-shaped Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Osterschinken (Easter ham) and succulent slow-roasted lamb.
But the main attraction is the Easter eggs.

The Best Easter Markets in Vienna

Altweiner Ostermarkt- The Old Vienna Easter Market

One of the oldest, and my favourite in Vienna, is the ‘Altwiener Ostermarkt’.
It is located at the Freyung– only a short walk from Stephansdom. The Freyung is one of the oldest marketplaces in Vienna.

The square in front of the Schottenkirche is transformed with quaint wooden huts of various sizes lining the street. Music floats through the air as the market fills with people. The market has a music program, and children love the Kasperl puppet theatre.

The centre of the market is dominated by the “Ostereistand”.
Crates are piled up, out of which spills a kaleidoscope of colourful Easter eggs onto the cobblestone square. The hand-painted eggs are decorated in every design imaginable, including painted scenes, animals, lady beetles, bees, Easter scenes, floral, lacework, musical, and many more.

The markets also feature booths with arts and crafts, flowers, jewellery and food such as local beer, Langos, raclette and Kaiserschmarren.
The Atlweiner Ostermarkt is also the site for a small organic farmers’ market.

Our Recommendations | Where we stay in Vienna

♥ Perfect for families, we loved staying in a Maisonette (two bedrooms over two floors) at the König von Ungarn -directly in the centre of Vienna behind Stephansdom.
♥  Motel One Staatsoper, a great mid-range choice one block from the Opera and close to everything.
♥  I also love staying at the Hotel Pension Museum in Spittelberg, directly across from the U3 Metro Stop and Museums Quartier and Theaterhotel & Suites Wien in the 8th district- where I used to live, so this hotel feels like home.
You can find more hotel recommendations in our Vienna Hotel Guide

Am Hof Easter Market

A short walk from the Freyung, you will find the Am Hof Easter Market, located in the oldest square in Vienna.  The Am Hof square dates back to the 12th century.

The Am Hof Easter Market has rows of wooden booths and is one of Vienna’s larger arts and crafts markets.  You will find everything from jewellery, ceramics, glassware, leatherwear, handmade soaps and candles and an occasional decorated Easter egg.

The Am Hof Easter Market also offers plenty of choices to enjoy a drink of wine and a snack.  When you are peckish, stalls sell Viennese favourites: Kaiserschamarrn, Langos or the Speckstandl selling beer, pickles and sausages.

Where: Am Hof, 1010 Vienna, between Graben and Freyung
Directions: U3 to Herrengasse (4 min walk) or U1/U3 to Stephansplatz (5 min walk) or U2 to Schottentor (7 min walk)

The Easter market in front of the Schönbrunn Palace is one of the most romantic Easter markets. Around 60 stalls curve around the giant courtyard making a cosy village.

The Schönbrunn Palace Market provide everything from high-quality traditional crafts including eggs to woodcarvings, horn, ceramics and glass arts as well as traditional Austrian culinary delicacies and drinks.

The Market is great for families with a straw maze, craft hut, boules courts, a carousel, a Ferris Wheel and a children’s railway.

Easter Markets in Austria

Vienna may have some of the most famous Easter markets, but you’ll also find charming Easter markets across Austria in many towns and cities.
These smaller markets often appear over the Easter long weekend and offer a lovely mix of traditional crafts, decorated eggs, seasonal foods, and local music.

Some beautiful examples can be found in Klagenfurt, Villach, Gmunden, Innsbruck, Hall in Tirol, and Kitzbühel.
