Kaprun
Kaprun lies in the Kitzsteinhorn valley, 8 km south of Zell am See.
Kaprun was once an alpine farming village, but since the end of the 19th century it has become known as a holiday destination. Farms still dot the countryside, with cattle grazing on the summer mountain pastures.
The village is at the base of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier (3203 m / 10508 feet). Kaprun is a typical alpine village with a population of ~3000 people. Kaprun is a nature lovers and sports enthusiasts destination. The Salzburger Platz is the heart of the village, where you’ll find shops, bakery, café-bars and restaurants. The village church is perched up on a rocky crag, above the village with its typical Alpine A-framed chalets and the 12th century Burg (Castle) Kaprun.
Kaprun is a well-known winter skiing destination and is one of the few that offers guaranteed snow from autumn until late spring on the Glacier.
In the summer, the grassy mountain slopes are grazing grounds for the alpine cows who nonchalantly share the hillsides with the hikers and mountain bikers. In addition to amazing mountain panoramas, walks and hikes on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, there are many other famous sights, including the Sigmund Thun Klamm (gorge) and the High Alpine Reservoirs.
Kaprun is also known as a place to “tune-out”, rest and rejuvenate, being the home of the Tauren Spa Resort, the largest spa and wellness centre in Austria.
