Pre-Travel Planning

Before you hit the slopes, careful planning can save time, money, and stress.
From travel and accommodation to insurance and transport, these tips ensure your trip starts smoothly.

1.  Reserve ski rental in advance

Book your skis, boots and helmets before you arrive, especially during peak periods. Early booking ensures your preferred sizes and equipment type are available, and some rental shops also offer ski lockers as part of the package

2.  Book ski lessons early

Ski lessons are very popular during Christmas, New Year and February.
Popular lesson times sell out quickly, so we recommend booking at least two months in advance to secure the times and instructors you want.

3.  Book ski lockers in advance

Ski lockers are limited and in high demand, especially those located at valley lift stations.
Book lockers 1–2 months in advance wherever possible.
Some ski rental shops include locker use in their rental packages, which can be a convenient option.

4. Check airline baggage fees for ski equipment

Before booking your flights, check airline charges for checked ski bags.
Fees vary significantly between airlines and can add considerable cost if not planned for in advance.

5. Arrange reliable mobile phone coverage

Check your mobile phone coverage before travelling.
Reliable data is valuable for maps, weather updates and emergency contact.
We recommend using Airalo for convenient eSIM coverage in Austria.

6. Get comprehensive ski insurance

Ski insurance is often an optional extra on standard travel insurance policies.
Make sure your cover includes skiing, off-piste (if applicable) and mountain rescue.
Helicopter rescue in the Alps is costly without adequate insurance.

7. Organise and Book Transport to your Ski Resort

Plan your journey to the resort in advance, particularly during peak travel periods.

Train travel: Austria’s rail network is excellent, but trains can be very busy during weekends and school holidays.
Be sure to reserve seats in advance, especially on peak travel days.

Car hire:  If renting a car, familiarise yourself with driving requirements in Austria, including the compulsory motorway vignette.

Ski resort transfers: Many companies offer direct transfers from airports or train stations to your accommodation. These are especially convenient if you have lots of luggage or are travelling with a group. Transfer services often sell out during peak periods, so it’s essential to book early.

8. Allow extra time on arrival to the Ski Resort

Travel delays, weather conditions and traffic are common during peak winter weekends.

Avoid booking lessons or tight schedules on your arrival day, particularly if travelling on a Saturday.

Equipment and Preparation

Having the right equipment and being properly prepared is key to enjoying skiing in Austria safely and comfortably.
These tips cover rentals, boots, clothing, and essentials to carry on the mountain.

9. Inspect your ski equipment before hitting the slopes

If you are bringing your own equipment, have it serviced and checked before travelling.
If renting, allow time on arrival to ensure skis, boots and helmets are correctly adjusted.

10. Make sure your ski boots fit properly

Comfortable boots are essential. Ill-fitting boots can turn an enjoyable day on the slopes into a painful experience.
When trying on boots, ensure they feel snug but not tight.
Ski trousers should always be worn over your boots, not tucked inside.

11. Bring a small backpack or ski-specific rucksack

A compact backpack is helpful in carrying spare layers, extra gloves, snacks, water and personal items without returning to your accommodation midday.

12. Carry small snacks

Carry a few small, easy snacks in your jacket pocket, such as muesli bars or nuts, to keep your energy levels up on the slopes.
They’re ideal for a quick boost between runs or when mountain huts are busy.
In Austria, gummy bears are a popular choice, especially with children, while Dextro Energy tablets are widely used for fast, reliable energy.
Local supermarkets stock a wide range of nutritious snacks that are perfect to take with you on the ski piste.

13. Dress for changing mountain conditions

Layering is key.
On colder days, thermal base layers are essential, while on warm, sunny days, it’s easy to overheat.
Always pack extra layers so you’re prepared for both the coldest and warmest conditions.

Ski Passes, Apps and Schedules

Maximise your time on the slopes by understanding lift passes, resort apps, and ski schedules.
Planning ahead helps you avoid queues and make the most of your ski days.

14. Choose the right ski pass

Research lift pass options carefully to find the best value for your skiing plans.

Single-day lift passes are usually the most expensive, typically ranging from €65 to €82 per day at Austrian resorts.
Multi-day, weekly and family passes offer better value.

If you plan to ski at more than one resort, consider multi-resort passes such as the SuperSkiCard, which provides access to a wide network of ski areas.

For North American visitors, the Epic Pass and Ikon Pass also include access to several well-known Austrian resorts.

15. Download resort apps and trail maps

Most Austrian ski areas offer official apps with live lift status, piste maps, weather updates and emergency information.
Download these before arriving so you can access them even with limited mobile coverage.

16. Check lift opening and closing times for your dates

Lift and gondola schedules vary between resorts, and even within the same resort, different lifts may operate at different times.
Timings can also change between peak and off-peak periods.
Checking lift schedules in advance helps you plan your ski days efficiently and avoid arriving at closed lifts.

17. Plan your skiing schedule to avoid crowds

Understanding peak arrival and skiing times can help you avoid crowds.

♦  Saturday is the busiest arrival day in most Austrian ski resorts.
Saturday mornings are often quieter for skiing, as departing guests are leaving and new arrivals have not yet reached the slopes.

♦  Pre-book your ski passes where possible to avoid long queues, especially on Saturday afternoons.

♦  Pistes are busiest at weekends. If possible, plan most of your skiing for midweek.

♦  Arrive at the ski area early—when the first lifts open. It becomes noticeably busier from around 10:00 am.

Saturday mornings are often quieter for skiing, as departing guests are leaving and new arrivals have not yet reached the slopes.

18.  Monitor the weather and snow conditions

Mountain weather can change rapidly, and conditions on the slopes can become hazardous.
We recommend using the Bergfex website or app for accurate weather forecasts, snowfall reports, and live resort conditions.

Be aware that poor weather conditions can make even easy slopes much more challenging—and even dangerous.
Always follow the advice of ski resort staff regarding weather and piste safety to protect yourself and others.

19. Confirm ski school meeting points &  start times

Ski school meeting points can vary by age group, level and language, and are not always at the same lift station or start at the same time.
Familiarising yourself with the locations ahead of time helps avoid first-morning stress.

20. Agree on meeting points | when skiing in a group or meeting non-skiers

Mobile reception can be limited in certain mountain areas.
Agree on clear meeting points and times in advance, particularly if skiing with children or larger groups.

This is especially relevant when meeting non-skiers.
Austrian ski resorts are not just for skiers—many mountain huts and après-ski venues are accessible to pedestrians.
Check in advance which gondolas and lifts allow non-skiers, so everyone can meet easily without confusion.

On Mountain Tips

Once you’re on the slopes, safety, timing, and strategy are everything.
From piste etiquette to skiing during lunch hours, these tips help you ski smarter and more enjoyably.

21. Safety on the mountain

Always ski safely and follow all FIS rules as well as the instructions of piste staff.
Respecting speed limits, right-of-way, and posted signs helps keep you and others safe on the slopes.
Remember that mountain conditions can change quickly, so stay alert and adjust your skiing accordingly.

22. Ski during peak lunch hours for quieter pistes

Mountain restaurants (Almen) are at their busiest between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, when queues are long, and seating is limited.

This is, however, one of the best times to ski, as the pistes are noticeably quieter.

Consider skiing through lunchtime and enjoying a late lunch after 1:30–2:00 pm

23. Bring cash for mountain huts

Many smaller alpine huts and mountain restaurants still only accept cash.
It’s always best to ask before ordering and carry some cash with you on the slopes.

24. Understand après-ski culture and timing

Après-ski in Austria often starts in the mid-afternoon, sometimes as early as 3:00 pm. Après-ski tends to finish earlier than expected on the mountain, often around 4:00 pm, as guests need to take the last gondola down or ski before the pistes close.
Planning your ski day with this in mind lets you enjoy both skiing and the social atmosphere without rushing.
Important: It is illegal to ski while intoxicated in Austria. Always plan your après-ski drinks responsibly to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the slopes.

Off-Piste Planning

Skiing in Austria isn’t just about the slopes. Plan rest days, alternative activities, meals, and shopping to ensure a balanced and stress-free alpine holiday.

25. Plan rest days

Skiing is physically demanding, especially if you’re not accustomed to consecutive days on the slopes.
Planning rest days or half-days helps prevent fatigue and injury, allowing you to enjoy your skiing more comfortably throughout your holiday.

26. Plan non-ski activities and day trips in advance

Even keen skiers benefit from planning a few off-slope activities.
Austrian resorts offer excellent spa facilities, winter walking trails, toboggan runs and cultural experiences.
Booking popular activities in advance helps secure availability, particularly during busy weeks.

Many Austrian ski resorts are also within 1–2 hours of Salzburg or Innsbruck, with frequent and efficient train connections. This makes it easy to plan a day trip to explore one of these beautiful historic cities.

27. Reserve tables at popular restaurants

Austria has many excellent mountain and village restaurants, but tables fill quickly during peak periods.
Reserve dinner in advance at any must-visit restaurants, especially during Christmas, New Year and throughout February.

28. Plan supermarket and shopping times

Supermarkets in ski resort towns can be extremely busy on Saturday afternoons due to guest changeovers, and every day around 4:00 pm, when the last gondolas close and skiers head into town.
Many grocery stores also close relatively early, typically between 6:00 and 7:00 pm.

If you are self-catering, try to shop early in the morning or on weekdays to avoid queues and ensure the best availability.

With these 28 essential Austrian Ski tips, you’re well-prepared to enjoy the slopes safely, efficiently, and stress-free.
From planning your equipment and lessons to navigating lift passes, mountain conditions, and après-ski culture, a little preparation goes a long way in creating a memorable alpine holiday.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned skier, following these practical guidelines will help you make the most of every moment on and off the pistes.
Happy skiing, and see you on the slopes!
